DENISE Yap

Denise is a performer who loves to entertain and educate people. Over the years, she has performed in Universal Studios Singapore, musicals, and corporate events. She was nominated Best Supporting Actor in the BOH Cameronian Arts Award 2020 and also received the Mercedez-Benz Award of Excellence for her Short + Sweet KL 2018 Musical Theatre group. She has also been teaching dance in the discipline of ballet, jazz, and tap for the past 7 years.

She graduated with BA(Hons) in Musical Theatre from LASALLE College of the Arts and always seeks to grow in all 3 skills - dancing, singing, and acting.

Having had several injuries in her lifetime (rotator cuff injury, tendinosis, tendinitis, bursitis, synovitis, slipped disc and ligament tear) she finds Gyrotonic(R) a very powerful tool to both prevent and recover from them. And as a dancer, it has helped her tremendously with balance and control especially in motion because of the Gyrotonic method's nature of continuous flow.

Denise is excited to be on board with ido studio and to share her joy of moving pain-free with a touch of entertainment to provide a wholesome experience for her clients young and old!

—  EDNA Kong

Edna's first encounter with the Gyrotonic movement method was in 2008. After experiencing tightness and mobility issues post-surgery, her ballet teacher recommended she try the Gyrotonic method. She is hooked to it since then. In 2019, Edna crossed paths with Samantha Lun after the latter returned from her overseas study (both went to the same commercial dance studio) and was very excited to further her Gyrotonic practice under Samantha. In 2021, Edna left the corporate world and took a leap of faith to pursue her passion in movement practice under the mentorship of Samantha Lun and Rita Renha.

Edna is also an avid Qigong practitioner and dances classical ballet weekly. She enjoys helping people from all walks of life and strongly believes that the Gyrotonic movement method is particularly effective in the area of rehabilitation, spinal health, and overall improvement of strength and mobility. Having experienced the first-hand benefits of this system, Edna is keen to share this method with everyone so that they can be equipped with skills to move with strength, control and fluidity.

—  EDWIN Yew

Edwin used to experience aches and pains, at times unbearable, from being stuck in a sedentary job all day. His posture was badly affected as a result. In the search to alleviate his issues, he found The Gyrotonic Method. He found that a regular Gyrotonic practice brought about multitudes of benefits for his physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

Ever since he begun practicing this movement method, he has experienced ease of movement and his aches and pains have subsided. This is all thanks to the efficient decompressive and flowy movement qualities of Gyrotonic that involves full body motion.

Edwin inspires to share this unique movement method of achieving strength, balance and flexibility to people from all walks of life. He believes that moving with intention helps to maintain the quality of each movement and hopes for everyone to experience a well balanced body through the Gyrotonic method.

—  SHAYE Au

Shaye was first introduced to Gyrotonic under the recommendation of her friend, who suggested she try a session with Senior Gyrotonic Trainer Samantha Lun of ido Studio. Jaded after countless failed rehabilitation attempts from her multiple injuries and medical conditions, Shaye arranged for a Trial session with Samantha with skepticism.

However, Shaye was blown away in a single 55-minutes session with Samantha. Her knee, which was swollen and inflamed post-knee procedure, felt light and less painful. She bought a package with Samantha there and then and never looked back. Shaye subsequently decided to pursue Gyrotonic as a Trainer herself under the mentorship of both Pre-Trainer Samantha Lun as well as Master Trainer Rita Renha. She hopes to spread the beauty of the Gyrotonic Expansion System and to help others benefit from it as she has.

Shaye is also a freelance group fitness instructor teaching high impact cardio classes across multiple gyms and clubs in Singapore. Having experienced multiple injuries to her leg and spine from previous accidents, Shaye is able to understand clients’ issues and problem areas well and work with clients to help them manage their pains and discomfort. Having once been partially immobilized, Shaye appreciates the importance of movement and life, and strives to help each and every one of her clients achieve increased mobility and movement through Gyrotonic.

—  MUMTAZ

Mumtaz discovered the Gyrotonic Expansion System while searching for sustainable ways to manage her idiopathic scoliosis, diagnosed at the age of 12 with a curvature of more than 40 degrees. Neither wanting to go through an aggressive procedure (spinal fusion) nor forcing her body into a rigid structure (body brace), she opted for other ways such as acupuncture, moxibustion and traditional Indonesian massage. While the pain in her body subsided through these treatments, it did not last.

Mumtaz turned towards movement and physical activities for alternative solutions. She learned swimming at the age of 24 to lengthen her spine, then explored yoga, pilates, weight and mobility training to strengthen her joints and core. She felt like they were still insufficient, and wanted something more. While reading on the experiences of other scoliosis warriors, Mumtaz came across the term Gyrotonic.

At ido studio, Mumtaz experienced the Gyrotonic method for the first time. Coupled with the skills and patience of ido’s founder, Samantha Lun, Mumtaz felt like a world of possibilities opened up to her. This movement method is incredibly unique. Movements that are usually discouraged for scoliosis persons, such as spinal extension and rotation, are made available to the unique scoliosis body through the equipment and philosophy. Mumtaz felt the lasting benefits of a regular Gyrotonic practice, and proceeded to complete her Gyrotonic certification.

Mumtaz loves working with individuals to improve alignment, alleviate pain, build strength and free the body. She is passionate about empowering people with scoliosis to discover their highest potential. She is also keen to journey with any of us who seek to inculcate a regular movement practice as part of our day-to-day.
